The Fáilte Isteach project began in autumn 2006 when it was noticed that an increasing population of new migrants within the locality were experiencing difficulties in their social and working lives due to limited or non-existent English. Daily tasks that we take for granted such as shopping, visiting the doctor, helping children with homework are extremely difficult without a knowledge of the predominant language. Our research indicated that while a variety of organisations cater for the needs of non-Irish nationals, many offer services to refugees in urban areas, there seemed to be little funding for language classes for migrant individuals and families living in local communities, who are working or available for work.
